Reading Support
Many primary school children need support to catch up in their reading to reach expected levels and they may be reluctant readers as they find it hard. Teachers can support readers who are behind their peers and who may also be dyslexic and struggling readers by offering the right book. With high interest and low reading age titles (often called Hi-Lo books) the illustration style and the subject matter appeal to the children’s maturity, but they are designed to be accessible. HiLo publishers incorporate features such as dyslexia-friendly fonts , lower contrast background colour, wider line and word spacing, helpful illustrations, and manageable chunks of text. Our recommended books for struggling and reluctant readers offer plenty of choice and this can really boost interest and reading stamina. Our Boost Reading packs offer books that are entertaining, highly appealing and fun, at text levels one year below the expected level for pupils who need more practice.
