Maverick Early Readers: Turquoise to White Year 2

Absolute winners for young readers, these beautifully illustrated, bright, engaging books offer some of the most fun stories we have read. Aside from the stunning look and feel of these books there is quality writing at the heart and a team of expert consultants, including Suzanne Baker, original author of Book Bands for Guided Reading, 1998, Institute of Education, making certain that Maverick Reading Scheme books follow the book bands guidelines and in the earlier levels, also follow Letters and Sounds Phases 1 to 5. For each book band level from Turquoise to White there is a clear structure of progression in terms of introducing more complex storylines through subplots, inference, prediction, and length. For Turquoise and Purple books, whilst phonic instruction will have finished formally, children’s phonic knowledge will be stretched and opportunities to read words with more phonic complexity is intrinsic to the narrative. Stories are still mostly straightforward but there are simple subtexts beginning to emerge as well as more complex dialogue and sentence structure. A handy quiz is at the end of the book to help children revisit the story and to practise comprehension. From Gold to White, the stories are chapter-based and children will need more concentration to follow the plot and keep track of characters. In White level books, children will be able to start ‘reading between the lines’ and may know something that the characters do not, perhaps a surprise ending! Children will love these books and they could be used in either the reading scheme or the library.
