The 12 books, at book band level Orange, are a mix of fiction and non-fiction and include popular character-led books such as Adventure Kids. The inside cover notes for parents, carers and teaching assistants are probably the most fun and vibrant we have seen, so it is no wonder children are enjoying them. Bug Notes clearly show children what they will be practising with a list of words and a phonic skill. Top Tips encourage children and parents to practise skills – such as ‘encourage your child to use the picture’ or ‘talk about the front cover’. Have a go is usually a game around words and graphemes, whilst Skill Builder will offer an activity based upon developing specific reading skills or habits such as ‘talk about speech bubbles’. A sign post directs children to the back cover and Bug Time where fun is foremost and children are given fun challenges that encourage them to go back over the book as well as an extension activity (Draw it, Make it, Try it etc.). The extra notes on the inside and back covers are useful to embed learning and have a child-friendly design. Children will not want to miss the fun.
