The Bug Club Independent Blue collection features 28 short chapter books, at book band level Dark Blue (Bug Club level Blue), which benefit from inside cover notes that provide extra support and extension activities. Inside the covers there arenotes and fun interviews with the author, whilst back cover notes encourage readers to: Find It – go back to the text to test comprehension; Share it – e.g. make a board game based upon the story theme; Want to Know More – encourages research or offers fun facts. Our favourite is the Globe Challenge Book, Creatures in Danger, a fun interactive way of looking at the UK Coastline with Uncle Globe and his niece Ruth Trotter. The books are shorter than many library (non-scheme) books for older pupils, but are ideal for sharing with an adult for assessment and for assuring that perfectly pitched books offer the right level of challenge and that an array of different genres are read.
