Reading for Pleasure

Reading for pleasure is proven to be highly effective in improving outcomes for children, educationally, socially and emotionally. In fact, “Perhaps surprisingly, reading for pleasure was found to be more important for children’s cognitive development between ages 10 and 16 than parent’s level of education. The combined effect on children’s progress of reading books often, going to the library regularly and reading newspapers at 16 was four times greater than the advantage gained from having a parent with a degree.” (Institute of Education, 2013)

Our passion is to support teachers to easily source books that children will love to read and we recommend these as the best children’s books for promoting reading for pleasure in primary schools. We have fiction and non-fiction reading for pleasure collections for KS1 & 2 and also collections organised by year group. Reading aloud to the whole class is one of the best ways to promote reading for pleasure, and our Spring, Summer and Autumn Term Highlights are our recommendations for fantastic high-quality texts published in the previous term, perfect to use as class readers or place in the school library.
