The Value of Diversity in Books
It should not be difficult to source books where the heroes, heroines and main characters represent the diversity we find in modern Britain, but it is. Books that feature a wide range of children from a variety of different ethnic backgrounds are hard to find, but they are important to give all children the opportunity to see themselves, and others from different backgrounds, reflected in the books that they enjoy.
We have put together 3 book collections for children in key stage 1, lower key stage 2 and upper key stage 2 that are full of brilliant books that represent ethnic and cultural diversity and include people with disabilities. Whether the story is about football, space exploration, school friends or magical quests, the diverse characters are there, living on the pages and in the minds of the readers.
