Diversity in New Picture Books for KS1

The first thing we noticed when we started this collection is that most picture books feature animals and that this makes it very difficult to give children that crucial opportunity to see themselves, and others from different backgrounds and abilities, reflected in the books. We made it even harder for ourselves by ruling out old favourites like 'Handa's Surprise' in favour of recently published books that mostly feature diversity as we experience it in Britain today and which subtly and sensitively promotes an inclusive society where all individuals are valued.
