Bug Club Independent: Grey

Children using the Bug Club Independent reading scheme have been shown to make good progress in a study carried out by the Institute of Education and better progress than peers who are not immersed in Bug Club books. Aligned with the widely used KS2 book band levels, Brown, Grey, Dark Blue, Dark Red and Dark Red+ for pupils exceeding expectations, Bug Club Independent is perfect for monitoring KS2 pupils’ reading progression. Reading books are expertly written and levelled, maintaining a bright, varied, attractive ‘real’ book look and feel that helps to keep children enthusiastic about their independent reading. Progressing through book band colours is a good motivator for children who will be proud of their achievement in reading. Books are shorter than many library (non-scheme) books for the older age pupils, but are ideal for sharing with an adult for assessment and for assuring that perfectly pitched books offer the right level of challenge and that an array of different genres are read. As always the inside covers provide extra support and extension activities. Inside the covers of the short chapter books at Grey level, there are notes and fun interviews with the author, whilst back cover notes encourage readers to: Find It – go back through the text to look for alliteration for example; Share it – work with a friend to design an Alien each and create a comic strip; Want to Know More – encourages research or offers fun facts. This collection of 28 books, at book band level Grey, includes the mythical stories of Beowulf, exciting fiction from popular authors and series, including Guy Bass’s Dinking Dings and Margaret Ryan’s Pet Finders, as well as vibrant non-fiction books on a wide range of subjects.
