Primary School of the Year 2014

Wednesday 19th November 2014 saw the second year of the hugely successful Lynn News Education Awards, attended by local schools and businesses, as well as the Mayor of King’s Lynn and West Norfolk. The evening flew by far too quickly and celebrated the work of outstanding teachers, students and schools throughout the borough.

This year Pandora Books were proud to sponsor the Primary School of the Year award and we wanted to reward the winning school with a selection of books for their library. Brancaster Primary, with a pupil roll of just 45, was the school very much deserving of this accolade with their innovative and inspiring projects, extra-curricular outings and community work.

After hearing about their brand new library, built with money raised wholeheartedly by staff, pupils and the supporting local community, we wanted to know if there were any gaps on their bookshelves that our gift donation could fill. Head Teacher, Sarah Bocking, requested books focusing on topics such as the Iron Age, the Saxons, the Vikings, London, the locality, as well as reading books for boys in years three to six and non-fiction reading books for infants.

Our Book Collections Manager, Marcia Napp, leapt to the challenge and put together a substantial selection of popular titles which included Dirty Bertie: Smash! by Alan MacDonald, Lucky by Chris Hill and Timmy Failure: Now Look What You’ve Done by Stephan Pastis. After an informative presentation from Marcia about her job and the work we do with schools, the children were invited to look at the books and we discussed with them some of the covers and stories that instantly grabbed their attention. It was encouraging seeing their excitement and enthusiasm for the books, sharing them with their friends and delving right into the pages!

Marcia commented that the highlight of the visit was the tour of the library we were given by the pupils. “It was a real treat to be welcomed into the school and shown their library and work. Thank you for having us!”
