For schools looking to update reading scheme resources in KS1 with phonically decodable books, Big Cat for Letters and Sounds is a series of expertly written books all of which are fully aligned to Letters and Sounds and banded from Lilac to Turquoise. Reading notes, including focus phonemes and common exception word lists, help parents reading at home and allow children to practise new words or sounds before each reading session. Green level books (Phase 5 Letters and Sounds) introduce and practise alternative spellings such as /oa/, o, ow, o-e through books such as Dragon Owner’s Manual and /ur/, er, ear in Wild Homes (‘Termites make tall, steep mounds of earth’). Common exceptions words are used in line with Phase 5 of Letters and Sounds.
